The Self-directed Method for Children
Why Parents Choose Montessori
Parents Choice
Montessori has had its misconceptions and myths over the years that stem from not understanding exactly how it works or what goes on in the classroom. But parents all over the United States who have done their research take great interest in this method of learning, and here's why.
A study was done by Elizabeth Hiles to determine why parents sent their children to Montessori school and after many responses in the survey, one parent in particular says, "I wanted my children to be allowed to learn at the pace dictated by their own abilities and not by a preset curriculum…. Our younger child loves to push ahead to master concepts that are not taught in her grade at other local schools" (Hiles 2018). Therefore, Montessori is more than just pre-selected course materials, it is an opportunity for your young ones to grow and explore independently and gain skills they wouldn't normally gain in public schools.
The Art of Story-telling
Story-telling is more than jut reading a book to children, story-telling involves captivating the audience, usually without looking down at a book, and it leaves room for audience participation. In an article titled, "The Art Of Story-telling in a Montessori Classroom", it describes how, "Research shows that storytelling is effective in growing students’ reading, listening, and speaking skills specifically. Again, storytelling and reading-aloud can be remarkably similar experiences. However, one study found that storytelling surpassed reading aloud in one area: recall ability, that is, memory" (Kulikow 2022). Therefore, Montessori is much like holistic businesses because they both are specialized in looking at the deeper meanings of things and getting to the root source.
